Introduction
Are you ready to transform your pup into a well-behaved canine genius? Positive reinforcement is the way to go, and exactly what you need to get started—along with what you should leave off your list.
First, a Critical Note:
I don’t endorse aversive tools. Never. Pain is unnecessary and cruel for learning. Period. No arguments about “correct” use; there’s no correct way to inflict pain. If you’re here to debate, save your time. Let’s focus on what truly works: positive reinforcement
What is Positive Reinforcement Dog Training?
Positive reinforcement training revolves around rewarding desired behaviors. This makes you more likely to repeat those behaviors. It’s about focusing on what your dog does right and marking those correct with a click, word, or visual cue.
The Must-Have Tools for Positive Reinforcement Dog Training
You need just two things to start
- Something to mark the behavior
- Something to reward the behavior
Tools to Mark Your Dog’s Behavior
- A Clicker:

The most common and precise tool. A clicker delivers a sharp “click” that instantly marks your dog’s correct behavior.
- Affordable Option: A 4-pack at around $1.50 each.
- Hand-Friendly Option:** This one fits nicely in your hand and has an extendable stick for targeting.
- Cat People Option: This set of two clickers plus a target stick at a much lower.
- Fun Option: Check out this hot dog version!
- A Whistle:

An alternative to the clicker, delivering a precise sound that works well at great distances.
- Afford Set: Includes a whistle and a clicker. Pet-training whistles fit in your teeth, leaving your hands free.
- A Word:
“Yes or any word you prefer. Some people use foreign language words to avoid confusion.
Why a Word? Maybe your dog is scared of clicks or whistles, or you have a disability that limits your use of tools. Training with a word ensures you can always mark and reward your dog.
- A Visual Marker:
Thumbs up, an ASL sign, or a cue card.
- A Visual Marker:
Why Visual? My dog Penny is deaf! No click, whistle, or word would ever work for her. Visual cues are essential for deaf trainers and dogs.
- A Tactile Marker:
touch or puff of air.
Accessibility: Great for deaf-blind dogs and owners. A firm stream of air through a straw or a consistent light touch works well.
Tools to Reward Your Dog’s Behavior
Your dog performed the correct behavior. Yay! You marked it on time. Double yay! Now comes the reward.
- Food: The most obvious and often the choice.

Low-Value Rewards: Piece of kibble or training treats work for behaviors your dog already knows.
Mid-Value Rewards: Freeze-d liver or cut-up hot.
High-Value Rewards: Squeeze cheese, rotisserie chicken strips, smoked salmon, or freeze-dried cat treats.
- Toys : For toy-obsessed dogs, a ball or tug toy can be a great reward.

- Ball Lovers : A 20-pack of balls cheap.
- Tug Toy : A safe and fun tug toy option

have your marker and reward. what?
- A Treat Pouch: If you’re like me and can’t juggle a leash, clicker, and treats, a treat pouch is a lifesaver.
- Cute Option : Colorful cross-body pouch.
- Affordable Option : Belt bag.
- Elaborate Option : With poop bag dispers and pockets for keys or phones.
- Simple Option: Small, easily washable silicone choice.
- A Mat: Handy for the Relaxation Protocol or in public spaces.
- Portable Options: A towel, yoga mat, small rug, or travel mat.
